It's called 'SAKUMA DROP' -- it's a long history hard candy from Japan made with real fruit juice (in various flavours). The manufacturer is Sakuma Candy Co. in Ikebukuro, Tokyo by Jiro Sou Sakuma. What should I say ... it's a kind of retro item as it was firstly made in 1908 and still sold in its original 4 by 3.5 inch tin cans (which is so popular for all collectors). However, these days there's not only fruit flavour, but also come in distinctly non-candy-like flavours ... which is Regional Foods from Japan & Asia ... Then it was called 'Food Drops' !!!

Here there are some of the candy that tastes like food featuring the regional dishes of Japan !!!

From the left, it's the Chanko Nabe Food Drops ... Chanko Nabe is a 'one pot' dish eaten by Sumo Wrestlers. Of course, it must be full as stew protein intensive for. Amazingly this drops can transfer the savory feelings into this small candy ... so meaty feeling indeed for me.While Supporo Beer Drops (not savory dish but in fact beer drink) is sweet with mild taste ... a kind of Sapporo Light Beer (with no alcohol contain) ... however, I got the feeling of alcohol taste within ... Amazing right?
Another one is Shirokuma Ice Drops -- as the name mentioned, it's full with delicious taste of Shirokuma Ice-cream -- a shpecialty of Kyushu. Shirokuma is an Vanilla ice-cream topped with various fruits, sweet paste and condensed milk.Amazingly, I also found this one in internet (but still can't find the real thing yet) ... Thailand Tom Yum Goong Food Drops ... So pround as it's a kind of Thailand Signature Dish !!!
Anyway, there're a lot for you to try and get from Japan ... from Buta Don, Sasebo Burger, Kisune Udon, Roast Corn, Tokyo Noodle, Gyoza, etc.
What should I say -- Sakuma Drops is a kind of an icon of candy in Japan ... a classic piece of Japan Culture !!! -- similar to Pocky & KitKat ... with limited edition in each season for strangely flvoured flavours ... have fun and enjoy it as much as you can.
One last thing that I would like to show about Japan Culture on Candy ... This one even the taste is not like food but the look is ... such as Sushi Tray or Bento !!! ... another thing as Souvenier from Japan with the real feeling of eating ...

Thank you for the owners of some pictures that I took from internet -- Original Sakuma Box & Candies, Tom Yum Goong Food Drops & Bento Tray Candy.

I lived in Japan for 11 years and can add some extra info about these food drops:
- they are often used in "earthquake kits" as an emergency food source.
When I bought my earthquake bag, one can of assorted flavors was inside.
I enjoyed your post very much.

Wow -- it's so interesting to hear that ... so it's proven that this candy is a so real Japanese Culture :)
